Chapter 587: The Laws Concerning One Who Blew A Shofer in
a Pit.
1. One who blew the Shofer inside a pit or a cave, those standing inside the cave or pit are Yotzai (covered). Those who stand outside: If the sound of the Shofer was heard, they are Yotzai. But if they heard the sound of the cave, they are not Yotzai. The same applies if one blows the Shofer inside a large barrel and similar things. If they heard the sound of the Shofer, they are Yotzai. But if they heard the sound of the pit, they are not Yotzai.
2. If one began blowing the Shofer inside a pit and got up outside the pit and completed it, they are Yotzai. Since whatever was heard inside and outside was the sound of the Shofer. [Also the ones originally standing inside the pit are Yotzai.]
3. If one heard part of the Shofer blast in a not valid way (M.B: like part before sunrise) and part of it in a valid way, or if he told the blower when he was in the middle of blowing, “have in mind to be Yotzai me”, and when he blows, leaves over the minimum amount of time needed for a Shofer blast, he is not Yotzai. Some say that he is Yotzai if he heard the minimum length of time needed for a blast, in a valid way. [The same applies if he heard part of the Shofer blast and part of the sound of the pit; for example, if the blower was inside a pit and he was standing outside and in the middle of the blast, he went inside the pit.]
